This Connect session will be an interactive working session focused on refining a draft guidance document on ethical and equitable sharing of human genomic data in collaborative research. The guidance is under development following recommendations from the presenter's PhD research, which adopted a multi-stakeholder approach involving genomic researchers, research ethics committee members, national regulators, community advisory board members, and practicing lawyers.
Rather than presenting a finished product, the session will invite GA4GH participants to actively engage with selected draft guidance points and reflect on their relevance, clarity, and applicability across different research and governance contexts. Participants will be encouraged to share whether and how ethical, social, and legal (ELSI) challenges — such as consent for secondary use, data access and control, benefit sharing, and power asymmetries — arise in their own work.
Through facilitated discussion, the session will “field test” the draft guidance, identify priorities for refinement, and surface gaps requiring further work. Feedback will directly inform revision of the guidance ahead of piloting in low- and middle-income country contexts.
