Azure Hermes, a proud Gimuy Walubara Yidinji person and Traditional custodian of the Cairns region, serves as the Deputy Director of the National Centre for Indigenous Genomics (NCIG) at the Australian National University. In her role as NCIG’s Community Engagement Coordinator, she is tasked with engaging Indigenous community leaders, senior custodians, and families, facilitating processes of consent with cultural sensitivity and ethical integrity.
With a deep understanding of complex scientific concepts and a commitment to cultural values in decision-making, Azure has expanded her influence beyond grassroots engagement. She is a member of Indigenous Advisory committees, including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Genomics Health committee and the CSIRO Australian Health Biobank Advisory Group, where her insights shape policy and practice.
Azure’s expertise extends to academia, where she has published on community engagement strategies and health genomic research. Her contributions have been showcased at national and international conferences, highlighting her dedication to advancing Indigenous-led research in genomic health medicine.
