Professor Enrico Coiera has been working at the intersection of information technology and healthcare for over three decades. Trained in medicine and with a computer science PhD in Artificial Intelligence, he began his postdoctoral career with 10 years at the prestigious Hewlett-Packard Research Laboratories in Bristol, UK, where he led numerous health technology projects. His internationally recognised textbook, ‘Guide to Health Informatics’, is in its third edition and has been translated into several languages.



He is the founding Professor in Medical Informatics at Macquarie University and the founding Director of the Centre for Health Informatics (CHI). CHI is the longest running biomedical and health informatics academic research group in Australia. Professor Coiera is also founder of the Australian Alliance for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (AAAiH) formed in 2018, and responsible for the National Policy Roadmap for AI in Healthcare launched in 2023.



Professor Coiera is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences, and elected Foundation Fellow and the first President of the Australian College of Health Informatics. He is a foundation member of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics, and a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics.
