With over 25 years of research experience in the ethical aspects of genetics and genomics, Ainsley Newson is Professor of Bioethics at the University of Sydney, Australia. Ainsley’s work has led to over 150 publications, and she has secured significant grants from funding bodies including the Australian Research Council and the European Union. Ainsley has a longstanding interest and track-record in the ethics of newborn screening, including how genomics may be successfully introduced at this life stage while also maintaining the sustainability of existing highly-trusted and effective population screening programs. Ainsley was a member of the group that developed Australia’s newborn bloodspot screening policy framework (released in 2018) and since 2018 she has been a member of the New South Wales Newborn Screening Expert Advisory Group. Ainsley is also an Investigator on two Australian research projects considering how genomics might be used in Australian newborn screening, and the ethical and equity issues that will arise. In 2022, Ainsley founded the Australian ELSI Genomics Network, which has since hosted over 10 successful events to showcase local research and impact in the ELSI field.
