GA4GH Standards (DRS, Passports) underlying the Data Ecosystems supported by Gen3
Description

The NIH Cloud Platforms Interoperability (NCPI) working group is leveraging GA4GH standards from the Cloud Workstream and DURI Workstream to enable interoperability. NCPI, consisting of the NCI Cancer Research Data Commons, the NHGRI AnVIL platform, NHLBI BioData Catalyst, and the Kids First Data Resource Center, is leveraging the Data Repository Service (DRS) to provide a consistent API for accessing file object data and adopting GA4GH Passports and Visas for authorization. This poster details the Gen3 platform's implementation of GA4GH DRS and GA4GH Passports and Visas. Additionally, it gives a case study into how NCPI has been able to fill the gap regarding handoff of DRS IDs by adopting the Portable Format for Bioinformatics (PFB) as a handoff mechanism to share a collection of DRS IDs along with a minimal set of file metadata fields between data discovery user interfaces and compute environments and workspaces. In this poster, we outline the implementation of DRS for identifying the location of the file objects, PFB as the handoff mechanism, Passports as the authorization for downloading DRS file objects. Additionally, we will present the challenges we faced and lessons learned on adopting and implementing these standards as a driver project.
