Name
Bridging location and phenotype
Description
This session aims to develop a standardised approach for capturing and representing geolocation identifiers in human cohort studies to enable robust, scalable research on gene–environment interactions (GxE = phenotype). Current inconsistencies in how geolocation data are recorded hinder data discoverability and interoperability. This session will outline a roadmap for linking environmental exposures — physical, chemical, social, and built or natural environments — to individuals using longitudinal geolocation metadata, while ensuring privacy and ethical considerations. We will discuss existing methods for environment-cohort linkage, location identifiers (e.g. Unique Property Reference Numbers), and their utility for global harmonisation. Discussion will focus on exploring how to implement standards in major cohort initiatives as well as in the clinic to support large-scale exposomics and GxE research.
