Abstract
The GUARDIANS program (Genomics Uplift for Australia through Research Data Infrastructure At National Scale) is a national initiative to transform Australia’s capacity for secure, standards-aligned access to human genomics and related omics research data. Funded by Bioplatforms Australia through the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS), GUARDIANS is coordinated by Australian BioCommons and delivered in partnership with leading organisations, including the Australian Access Federation, Children’s Cancer Institute, Garvan Institute of Medical Research, National Computational Infrastructure, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, The University of Melbourne and The University of Sydney.

The program has two iterative phases designed to provide direction and flexibility as delivery progresses. The initial phase focuses on establishing core infrastructure that enables researchers to more easily discover, access, and analyse Australian human omics datasets. Our Phase I outcomes aim to include live platforms with real data use cases, and established governance, demonstrating the value and feasibility of national-scale federation. The subsequent phase will extend infrastructure maturity, support broader community onboarding, and enable deeper integration with international data-sharing efforts.

Progress in Phase I is already visible across four program streams: core services and expertise; foundational infrastructure, data flagship projects; and innovation pilots. Teams are actively delivering shared infrastructure including identity and access management, data governance, and data resource management. Our work uses global standards including those from GA4GH, and incorporates technologies like Beacon and Gen3 to support discoverability, interoperability, and responsible data sharing. Ongoing collaboration and community demonstrations foster alignment and shared technical direction across the program.

GUARDIANS is committed to supporting the ongoing sustainability and coordination of Australia’s human genomics data ecosystem. By building on past efforts and guided by national priorities, GUARDIANS is enabling a future where Australian researchers can securely access and use nationally significant genomics data to accelerate biomedical research and clinical impact.
