Disrupting False Binaries in DEI Work in Science

Riding along as a passenger seems fine, until you end up participating in exclusionary behaviors you never intended to practice and never realized were happening in your teams. Working toward equality and justice in science requires disrupting the status quo in yourself and your work groups. Yet too often many feel paralyzed by a false binary – take ‘the right’ action or stay in bystander mode. This workshop aims to explore how exploratory questions and perspective taking are essential yet often overlooked options in social justice and equity initiatives. The workshop will draw from participants' own experiences and highlight the skills of inquiry and striving to see the system through the eyes of others as important, intermediary steps between observing and taking direct action.
